This is one of 4 versions. All 4 were created with paintings and pastels between 1983 and 1910.
All show a figure with an agonized expression against a landscape with a tumultuous orange sky. It was described by Arthur Lubow as 'an icon of modern art, a Mona Lisa for our time'
This photo is one of the painted versions and was created in 1893. You can find this in the National Gallery of Oslo. The Munch Museum holds the other painted version (1910) and also the pastel version from 1893.
The 1895 pastel version of the painting was sold for a record $120million in May 2012
The photo to the right is called 'The Sick Child' (1885) It is one of six paintings given with this name by Munch between 1885 and 1926
